About the Embassy

The Embassy of India is located at 16, Rua Pero da Covilhã - Restelo, 1400-297 LISBOA.
It is housed in a modern villa overlooking river Tejo and the tower of Belem from where Vasco da Gama set sail for India in the 15th Century.
The Embassy moved to its present premises on 26th October 1987.

The 'Samudramanthan' is a two storey building with a basement of the same constructed area and has gardens both in front and behind.
On commencement of Diplomatic relations in 1975 the Embassy functioned from a flat in Rua das Amoreiras until it was shifted to Restelo in 1987.

The first Indian Mission in Portugal was opened in 1949 and it functioned till 11th June 1953. However, political turmoil of the times over the question of Goa led to snapping of all diplomatic ties in 1955.

The ties were, finally, restored with the visit of Dr. Mário Soares, the then Portuguese Foreign Minister to India and the signing of historic Treaty (Restoration of Diplomatic Relations) on 31st Dec 1974 at New Delhi.
